From its chiseled glass body, traditional wispy lettering, and horse/jockey metal stopper, a bottle of Blanton's is hard to miss. While its classy exterior draws all the attention, it's what's on the inside that keeps bourbon whiskey aficionados returning for more. As enjoyed by the likes of John Wick (2014), Blanton's is a crowd favorite, so much so there are often frequent waves of supply shortages.
Origins of Blanton's Bourbon
In 1984, under the direction of master distiller Elmer T. Lee, the first ever commercially sold single-barrel Bourbon was unleashed into the world, Blanton's Bourbon. Throughout Lee's career, Lee worked under Albert Bacon Blanton at George T. Stagg Distillery (now Buffalo Trace Distillery). Blanton was a notable leader in the manufacturing and distribution of Whiskey in the United States. He is credited for keeping the industry alive throughout the prohibition (1920-1933) and modernizing it to what it is today. At the end of his career, Lee released Blanton's Bourbon and appropriately named it after Blanton himself.
Why Blanton's Bourbon is Special
In crafting and releasing this new premium category of bourbon whiskey, Lee revolutionized the industry, popularizing single-barrel Bourbon. Near the end of his career, Lee recalled Blanton's private reserve of Bourbon that was carefully selected and preserved in the infamous Warehouse H. Warehouse H was constructed shortly after the prohibition by Blanton to keep up with production demands. It was built with metal materials later learned to be ideal for housing bourbon -its all-metal construction created a unique aging process. This unique aging process allured Lee and prompted him to create Blanton's. Today, the tradition continues, as Blanton's Bourbon continues to be made and stored in Warehouse H. Blanton's Bourbon is made with a high-rye formula that is milled, cooked, fermented, and hand-poured. It is made in a single barrel that an in-house distiller specially handpicked and is stored between 6-8 years. Due to its all-metal housing facility, fine-quality grains, and handpicked casks, Blanton's Bourbon is hard to match.
Blanton's Bourbon Review
Blanton's Bourbon set the standard for single barrel bourbons and continues to do so today. While light-bodied, it has an incredible flavor profile with notes of citrus, oak, vanilla, caramel, and spices. It is best served as is, clean or on the rocks. It is a highly sought-after American bourbon. Because of its popularity, Blanton's Bourbon is often hard to come by and is labeled as a unicorn.
